What is STEM and Why is it Important?

What is STEM?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Even outside the classroom, STEM is an essential part of our lives. Science is found everywhere. From why the sky is the color it is to what lurks beneath the ocean floor, science is a subject every student must tackle. Technology is continually growing and changing with every living day. With technology holding such an important part in medicine, commercial industry, and even education it is important for students to fully understand the basic aspects of technology before venturing out into the real world. Although engineering may not stem directly linked to your student’s life, it has expanded to must greater horizons than you may have thought. Engineering covers everything from building bridges to predicting future weather patterns. And lastly, mathematics is found no matter where you go. If your students strive to be accountants, or doctors, or even are inspired to follow in your footsteps and become educators, math is something that will follow close behind.

Why is STEM Important?

According to the U. S. Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing at 17%, while other occupations are growing at a mere 9.8%. Students who hold STEM degrees receive a higher salary than students who don’t. STEM careers fuel the regional economy. That being said, it is important to start them early. STEM is bridging the gap between ethnicity and gender because no matter your race or no matter your gender, STEM stays the same. STEM activities both inside and outside the classroom are a vital component to student’s education. Students must be taught by enthusiastic teachers using hands-on and minds-on activities and educational tools.

STEM Products

For example, students could utilize a product called Cublets. Cublets are robotic blocks that are a fast and easy way to inspire kids to become better thinkers. They encourage cooperative and group collaboration and are compelling reasons for mathematics, computational thinking, literacy, teamwork, life science, robotics, coding engineering, and student- directed learning. Since there is no need for programming, children as young as four years old can connect and construct their own robots. Cublets are a perfect addition to any curriculum ranging from Pre-K to High School and beyond! Want to go further in the robotic industry? Check out OzoBot. Ozobot Bit and Ozobot Evo are both easy to integrate into any curriculum – STEM and beyond. Ozobot Bit can be as fun or challenging as you make it. Simple and intuitive to use on one side, highly programmable and versatile on the other – there is something for every type of thinker, with our tiny tinker robot. On the other hand, Ozobot Evo entertains right out of the box with autonomous LED lights, sounds and movements. Evo uses Infrared Proximity Sensing to avoid obstacles and App-Enabled RC Controls to explore the world with you. Another popular product is Makey Makey, which encourages students to turn everyday objects into touchpad while combining them with the internet. It is a simple invention kit for beginners utilizing some of STEM’s main focuses such as technology and engineering. STEM is the way of the future and it is our jobs to shape that future for students and educators alike.

Chromebooks Are The Next Big Thing

Acer Chromebooks are the talk of the education realm.  Chromebooks take only seconds to start up and provide users with thousands of different apps, virus-protection, and a cloud to store and save data. According to Chris Smith, Director of Education Technology Communication Services Bath Central School District in New York, with the use of technology (such as chromebooks), “teacher’s roles [are shifting] to become supporters of learning and [helping] students understand what it means to be adaptable and collaborative” (Beyond Textbooks, p.3). Many schools are beginning to “flip” their learning by making students responsible for the independent study of material at home (that goes beyond more than just homework) while having teachers act as simply a guide in the classroom. With chromebooks, students are able to watch lectures or lessons while also having the opportunity to expand their learning horizons by participating in online tutorials… all from the comfort of their own homes, freeing up time in the classroom for more one-on-one learning experiences and interactive learning projects. Acer Chromebooks provide students with a new sense of independence. Now-a-days, students will need to possess a whole new set of skills in order to be successful in our technology-driven society. In the Bath Central School District, the IT department gained enough resources to connect their entire school district and are now able to focus their resources on curriculum and professional development, shifting the focus from the teacher to the student. Our future generations need to learn to become independent, collaborative, responsive students. Using Acer technology such as chromebooks, students can rely less on their teachers and more on themselves. Chromebooks and other technological sources allow students to apply what they’re learning to the real world using means such as video conferencing and blog sites. Double from Double Robotics gives you a physical presence at school when you can’t be there in person.  double robotics Double is being used in higher education in many ways, including building hybrid classrooms with both online and in-person students, to enable professors to continue teaching when they move out of state, and even in library services for giving remote tours and showcasing innovative technology. Bringing the rich learning environment of a classroom to a homebound or hospitalized student can be very difficult. Double enables the remote student to join the classroom in realtime, interact with other students one-on-one, and participate in group discussion. The telepresence robot is a revolutionary tool for homebound students. Double is helping to save school districts tens of thousands of dollars in their Professional Development budgets. Through partnerships with service providers, like Lindamood-Bell and TinyEYE Therapy Services, experts can join the classroom remotely, while maintaining a mobile presence. The remote expert no longer wastes time driving around the district or flying around the country. You can get more PD for your budget or re-allocate that budget to other learning activities. Double Robotics helped Eric Tuthill, an 18 year old student suffering from dysautonomia. Eric’s dysautonomia — also known as autonomic neuropathy — often forces him to stay at home. The vibrations from the short drive from his Lake Ann home to Traverse City can create side effects that last more than a week. His mother, Julianne Tuthill, assesses the risks every time they leave the house. The family seized the opportunity when TBAISD’s assistive technology team suggested using Double 2 Telepresence Robot to all Eric to attend school while at home.  Read the full story here. BoardShare – The Instant Smart Wall

Need a Digital Wall without the cost – BoardShare might be the answer. As the use of digital whiteboards increases in the coming years the need for greater access to education technology becomes more and more apparent. The ever increasing gap in the quality of education between certain groups of students has become a pressing political issue, and digital whiteboard technology can aid somewhat in closing this gap. Digital Whiteboards are a type of computer hardware that can turn an existing whiteboard or LCD screen into what is essentially an interactive computer screen. Although digital whiteboards have been around since 1991, research has only recently revealed how powerful their effect on learning and retention can be. Use of a digital whiteboard showed a 17% increase in test scores at the outset, with an average of 20% increase if the teacher had been using the digital whiteboard for more than 20 months. Furthermore, with optimal interactive whiteboard usage (neither too much time with the whiteboard nor too little) test scores jumped up 29%i. Digital whiteboards increase student’s engagement with the lesson being taught as well as their ability to participate, both of which are vital aspects to students actually successfully learning and retaining informationii. Unfortunately digital whiteboards have remained expensive and complex tools, representing a significant expense and time commitment from the teachers and schools that wish to use them, a sentiment echoed by Peter Roketenetz, the director of Technology at Woburn Public schools in Massachusets. Despite requests from teachers asking for digital whiteboards in their classrooms he struggled to come up with a solution because of his district’s limited technology budget, until he discovered BoardShare. “I was immediately drawn to the idea of a portable interactive whiteboard solution for our district. Teachers and administrators were always asking me about purchasing interactive whiteboards for classrooms, especially in our older school buildings. Up until now, I struggled to find ways to come up with the necessary funding to make this a reality. After learning about BoardShare, it made perfect sense to invest in this new and innovative solution at a fraction of the cost of installing permanent interactive whiteboards.” Roketenetz started by purchasing just eleven BoardShare units, one for each school in the district to be shared between all of the teachers in the given school. The BoardShares were a hit. Christine Wyard, a special education teacher at Woburn Public Schools had this to say about her experience using it with her students: “I use BoardShare for vocabulary review. Larger than life pictures really capture every students attention. We also use it for brain breaks, short videos to introduce lessons, and to edit sentences or to mark up words. Whenever I use it, I can be sure that every student’s hand will be up wanting a turn.” In fact, BoardShare quickly become so popular among the teachers and students, that Roketenetz purchased over 70 more within the next year with plans to expand even further. Roketenetz’s situation is not uncommon. Many schools face these budgeting concerns and unfortunately, the schools that could benefit most from use of digital whiteboards are the ones who tend to have the least access to them. Schools with small tech budgets and large class sizes may benefit greatly from the use of an interactive whiteboard but face serious budget concerns when it comes to buying them. This is further compounded by the amount of training it requires to master many digital whiteboards. Schools with budgeting concerns are hesitant to consider these sorts of expenses when there are so many other vital needs to attend to. BoardShare aims to service schools and businesses with these budget concerns while still providing a high quality product at a much more reasonable price. BoardShare retails for under $350 dollars and is incredibly easy to use, requiring little to no training. It works by utilizing a preexisting LCD monitor or projector hooked up to a computer to project an image onto a blank surface such as a whiteboard. The BoardShare camera is then used to track the movements of the BoardShare stylus against this surface. The camera itself is small enough to fit into one’s pocket, making it perfect for people who travel often or need to use it in multiple places. The hardware itself is very easy to set up. Once the software is installed and the BoardShare camera is plugged in the user will be guided through a simple 9-point calibration process. In less than one minute the BoardShare is ready to use. Click here to see a video of BoardShare in action. Once set up, BoardShare can be used to highlight and underline text, draw shapes, take screenshots, and share presentations with other BoardShare users. All of these tasks are achieved with an onscreen pallet that can be expanded or minimized at the user’s discretion, making BoardShare very simple and intuitive to master.

Can You Ace the Disaster Recovery Test?

When it comes to data protection, where does your school district begin?

The amount of data that today’s school districts generate is increasing exponentially and so is the need to protect the data.  Federal and state regulations govern the storage and retrieval of student information—regulations such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.  Then, schools have the typical security issues surrounding personal information, such as Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, and eligibility for federal meal programs. Moreover, there are test scores, student transcripts, records of educator certifications, health records, and transportation statistics—not to mention payroll!  Educators typically aren’t technologists. So when it comes to data protection, where does a district even begin? Just as teachers prepare for the classroom with lesson plans, school business officials and information technology (IT) professionals approach data protection with a documented disaster recovery (DR) plan. Dave LaClair from UniTrends wrote a nice whitepaper on what schools and Districts should be thinking about when it comes to a backup and recovery. Read the full whitepaper here.
